Tottenham complete first season guide

Making North London great

Tottenham have been the great runner up for too long now. The have started a transition, with a new manager, a new way of playing and a new-ish squad.

Welcome to the next instalment of how to manage an EPL team in the first season on FM24. So the basic premise here is that we manage each team in the Premier League for the first season and give our recommendations on each team. The blog will comprise of two parts, one up until January and the other will be at the end of the season.

This edition is for Tottenham, a team that I see as the most consistent also runs. I find the board is non committal on football issues, but thinks first about keeping the club afloat. Nonetheless they have had some great players and some great history around the club. On FM24, they are ushering in a new manager, a new way of playing and a new squad.

In this guide we are going to:

  • Look at the league performance and individual performances.
  • We will look at the tactics which have been used in FM24.
  • Potential transfers and areas of improvement.

Read on if you want to learn how to manage Tottenham on FM24!

Tottenham Results

In this section we look at the results so far this season. While results on the schedule are very general data, we can use it to see what sort of teams we have beaten and if we win at home or away more. When combined with the league placings it could give you an insight in the types of teams we do well against.

I’m not going to lie, it was a rough start to life at Tottenham and I was beginning to panic. When you realise the football I was trying to force on Tottenham in the tactics section you will see why. Also some of the best players at the club were injured like Bentancur. We lost four in 6 between September and October, that was rough.

Things picked up in November and we started taking teams apart. This just highlights that the team were gelling and that they were getting used to the new style. In December, we got a few big wins, home and away and went on a streak.

After a dismal start, we soon got into our stride and started performing well. Even so we are achieving what was asked of us and sitting in 7th. It was a worry at first but the team are playing brilliantly now and putting teams to the sword.

Looking at the stats we have a really good goal difference of +16. We score a lot of goals and we create so many opportunities and make any striker look good. We are averaging a score of 2-1 at the moment, meaning that we win more than we lose. The second half of the season will confirm this, I hope.

Individual Performance

In this section, we discuss the Tottenham individual player performance. FM24 does a good job of including a data you may need. These stats are where you can zone into a specific general threat in the team or to highlight any potential upcoming problems. It can be used to see positive trends too, like Xg rates. I won’t go into too much detail here as I will be writing for days.

The great news is that we have a number of players that playing out of their skin and getting 7+ averages. Another nice note is that they are spread across the team meaning the tactic is not letting us down or a particular role.

Tottenham Performance FM24

Looking at the Xg stats to start off with Richarlison stands out. He has achieved 10 goals from an expected 5.48, which is impressive. A lot of the team have been impressing on that front and contributing. There are a couple of under performers like Lo Celso and Ben Davies, not too fussed currently as it is only a slight under performance.

Looking at the passing completion rate, we use a standard of 85%. There are a number of players playing below the standard, like Richarlison and Son. I’m hoping a lot of these players are just adapting to the tactic currently as we had a bad start.

Tottenham Tactics

In this section we speak about the FM24 tactic that we have been using so far. We tend to start with the tactic that we first introduce in the day one series. Sometimes the theory does not work out and we have to change it, that is what we explain here.

For the more observant among you, you will notice that this is a 4222 Box formation. This was made famous by Brazil in the 70’s and we are looking to bring that back into fashion. The main reasons behind choosing this formation was the lack of wide players in the squad. Another reason was the fantastic talent they have in the centre of the pitch.

So how are we going to score goals, I hear you ask. Well you could go wide with the full back, or you could use the talented AMCs to thread the ball. This formation creates so many chances it doesn’t matter where they come from. The defence is fairly solid now, after the wobble at the start of the year and we are looking at a new forward for depth.

Conclusion

After an initial shock with Tottenham on FM24, we have turned the tide. There is an excellent set of youngsters here, aka wonderkids. There is a future and some great players at the club, like Son and Romero. This is a club in transition and will be a good club to establish a new way of playing and build a squad.

The strength I can see from this team is that they have an amazing central midfield. I mean it is fully stocked with key players and wonderkids. It is both solid defensively and creative, hence harnessing the power of the 4222 Box. The weakness with the team is the lack of width, which is a problem for attacking teams. Again this is why we opted for the 4222 Box.

The opportunity with this team is that there are a number of young players and that there is a transition going on. This means you can emboss your type of football on the club with little disruption. The threat is that there are not enough forwards in depth, well not enough quality forwards in depth.
