Player Recruitment: Using Star Potential (Man Utd)

Is potential ability in the stars ?

Our next experiment for player recruitment with Man Utd is through potential ability stars. Can we create a winning team today through recruiting tomorrow’s stars?

This hypothesis is probably one of the most simplest to follow, only behind current ability. We look at the weaknesses in the first team from the assistant reports under potential ability and then we use the scout reports to replace those players with new recruits.

The great idea behind this is stimulate the perfectionist motivation. We will probably never create the perfect five star team, but every year we churn the team. We sell the weaknesses who are not achieving their potential and replace them with players that could achieve theirs.

The new Man Utd team

Now the first observations with this recruitment type is that the players are expensive. I shouldn’t be surprised as the world and it’s wife know about potential ability and wonderkids. There is a high premium on any player that could be the next big thing and as a result makes this recruitment type more difficult.

While the drawback is that there are huge transfer fees involved, the scouts do find alot of players that are of a high ability. While we are looking for 5 star potential at the moment, picking up 4 star potential player is not to be sneered at. The more exposure to the first team these players have, the quicker they reach their potential in my experience.

Because of the high premiums, another avenue to use is to promote the best of the youth team in positions where you have weak players. Man Utd have a great selection of young players to push such as Gore, Diallo and Fernandez. This is a cheaper option, if they work out then great, and if it doesn’t you can sell to invest.

Man Utd Results

So far this recruitment method is working pretty well. We have progressed on last year at the half way point by being in third, and we are in touch with the league leaders. About to start the FA cup, still in the champions league, semi final of the carabao cup and winner of the UEFA Super Cup. So we are doing well so far, with a potential quadruple on the cards.

Man Utd Table

Our biggest problem, although it is not a problem, is that we conceded too many goals. So we need to look at how we can reduce the number of goals that we concede.

Conclusion

So in conclusion there is not a lot wrong with what we are doing with this team. If I had to be picky I would say we concede too many goals and we need to look at it in order to progress the team further. Overall, I’m very happy with the way that the team is performing.

Solution 1, we need to look at the assists against our defence and intervene to stop them happening. We won’t be able to stop everything, but if we look at the common trends then we can reduce it.

Solution 2, we look the weaknesses in the team according to the average rating. We change their individual training to strengthen their understanding of their position or role. We are trying to create a high performing specialist in each position.

Solution 3, we buy a couple of reinforcements and ring in the changes again. This will create some unsettling in the team, but could create the best team possible for us.

I will put these solutions into place, and as always do an end of season blog reporting back the findings and also how this recruitment method may have fared as well as what we could have done better.
