Player Recruitment: End of season win rates (Man Utd)

Can win rates be trusted to make a winning team?

After a season of recruiting players through win rates, how many trophies did Man Utd win? Win rate is key for analysts.

Building a recruitment strategy through win rates is a lot more difficult than i originally thought it would be. My initial thoughts were that we would basically recruit from the big teams that win a lot with the odd player from mid table teams. This is kind of what happened, but to create accurate data we need to keep refining our sorting filter and the win rate benchmark.

Unfortunately, on the player search filter the win rate function does not work, that would have made life easier. Some what we have to do is change the custom filter to games played and games won and do our own workings out. At least we have a benchmark to work from, as this would be impossible.

The overall goal is that we buy players with high win rates, higher than the league benchmark, and create a winning team mentality. This would have a positive influence on the team and youngsters in the real world and I hope that is what happens here.

Man Utd results

This strategy brought some interesting results. We had some of our worst performances in cups, but did well in the league. We finished only one point behind Chelsea who were the eventual winners. As close as this is, one game could have swung this in our favour and winning the league.

Man Utd Comps

Looking at the competitions other than the league, we only achieved what the board wanted in each cup. This is not enough to say that this recruitment style has been effective, whereas others have succeeded on all fronts. We need to take deeper look at the performances. Let’s start with the league positions:

Man Utd League Table

The major talking point here is the amount of goals that we scored, the most in the league. We also ended the league with the most wins in the league, meaning that we had the highest win rate. I would say that was a success in itself, and after one season that means our strategy is starting to bake.

The next steps here are how do we push it further? Again we are already recruiting from the top leagues in Europe and we are already buying players that fulfil our criteria. Maybe we could start looking at buying younger players, say 20-22 who are already achieving this great win rate feat and see if their win rate will grow more.

Man Utd performance

Well first things first, it is great to see a nice range of players from different positions in the top average ratings in a team. This really shows that there is quality in every position, and every team tends to want to work towards that. The front attacking four, played brilliant football and performed admirably. Additionally, they all impressed with about 30 goal contributions each.

Man Utd performance

The only two positions that struggled to perform were the full backs, but they struggled to remain fit and healthy for the majority of the season. As a result the younger centre backs played in those positions like Chadi Riad, who was great after he settled. Another observation is that most of the top performers in the team were original Man Utd players.

Man Utd Tactics

This formation is the team that played the last game. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with this team, they were really fun and pulled out some great results. We need to work on the relationships in the team and that will only improve once the players are settled.

Onana is going as he was once again a weakness in the team, giving the ball up. I think we need to start looking at pushing the ball to the wings to create chances and feed it back into the centre.

Conclusion

The main conclusion to recruiting with win rates is that it has had a positive outcome. The cups unfortunately did not work out, but they are based on a one game result. The league is a marathon and not a sprint and as a result it showed us some significant improvement. We scored the most goals and got the most wins in the league.

We didn’t win the league, so that shows that we still have got some work to do, but it is great progress and nice to see a strategy starting to filter into the team.
