Managing Luton Town in the first season

Continuing the good work at Luton Town

This is the second instalment of the first season with Luton Town. We have hit January and a number of things have happened, it’s been entertaining to say the least.

So we have got to January in the first season, and it has been full of ups and downs already. Target is the same, we have to avoid relegation, and I think Luton Town can do it. They have a big squad, with a number of options and a few touches of quality.

As well as that the board have rewarded us with £23m for January to get reinforcements in. It is a relief as we started the season with a budget of £2m and that did not last long. Without further ado, let’s get on with it.

The story of Luton Town so far…

From the screenshot (1/1/24) below you will see that, we are not in the relegation places. We have done a good job, of keeping away from the relegation and at one point were in the top 8. Obviously that would have been impressive, but playing the top four in quick succession hurt our spirit.

Luton Town

The team seem to be a bit weak in attack. When looking at the stats it would appear that the majority of our shots are taken by our MCs and the LW. Looking at the players there we need to seriously look at players who can finish and also maybe changing the tactic to work into box.

Transfer Desk

Looking at the team I think we could do with a few reinforcements. Defensively, although we are sound, I think we could do with a leader, with experience and teamwork. Someone who organises the defence would be perfect, with a bit of pace.

In midfield we need some balance. The midfielders in the team favour the defensive positions, apart from Barkley. He needs some back up, so a midfielder who is high in first touch, passing and off the ball will help immeasurably. As well as this, we need a finisher, either on the wing or midfield.

Luton Town

I actually think the strikers are okay, Adebayo shows promise and Morris started the season well. They need some invention, potentially turning the pressing forward into an advanced forward or just playing it as a support role pressing forward.

Conclusion

Despite having to change our tactic early in the season, it has done us well. The only problem is that we have hit a rotten run of fixtures with Luton Town. The top teams are just too good, although we did beat Chelsea. The main objective was to create a back four with the £2m we had to spend. We bought this chap:

And this chap:

Luton Town

Both of these guys are at an okay standard, and literally been brought in for depth. There was a serious lack of good full backs, but 4 at the back is proven to be the best defensive line.

We are on the right track and I look forward to posting the end of season results and how we got on. I hope this guide helps you, please leave a comment regarding any of the topics discussed today.
