Yokohama F Marinos objectives
Looking at the supporter objectives to start we can start building a strategy for our new team and our identity. The Yokohama F Marinos supporters are in a joyous mood after winning the J.League in the previous season, playing well with some good football.
The supporter objectives are pretty straight forward to be honest, they want to play possession football and win the league again. Playing possession football is an easy win, it restricts you to certain styles of football, but it’s successful football. What I mean by this it is proven that teams that pass more get more shots. More shots in turn means more goals in theory.
The board’s objectives for the club is even more shallow. They aren’t bothered about the type of football that you play, they seem to be more interested in budgeting. We do want to be the best team in the J.League though. They also appreciate that the signing of over 30’s does not have much reinvestment.
To summarise, when building our tactic we need to be looking at possession based styles like gegenpress and tiki taka. In terms of recruitment the board have clearly set out the guidelines to stick by. Further to that, we want to avoid buying over 30’s as their decline in ability becomes rapid.
The main thing here to look at is the synergy behind the board and supporters objectives in maintaining the dominance in reputation. This means win things and this means buying the highest reputation players. We want to be the best at this club.
Yokohama F Marinos First 11
Our next step is to look at the Yokohama F Marinos squad on FM24. Let’s look at the current ability stars to start off with, to get an idea of our key players. We can see that there is a handful of key players that stand out from the rest of the squad. It looks at first sight that the team could play in a 4231 wide formation. We like this formation as it is great for possession based tactics.
So this is great, with 6 key players playing in different positions it signals that most of the first team picks themselves. Also it has been highlighted in data at the Qatar World Cup that the top scorers tend to be AML and ST, both of which we have key players playing.
Moving onto the rest of the squad we can see that we can easily play a 4231 with this squad. We can also see that most of our top rated players can play in those positions. My biggest concerns looking at squad is that we have a lot of wingers and we do not have a top GK. Time to trim the fat in the wingers and buy a great GK with a good reputation.
Yokohama F Marinos Tactics
Looking at this team it is really easy to see where to go with them. We have two of the best imports in the league in Elber and Anderson Lopes in goals scoring positions. Elber will drive into centre to create second threat alongside Lopes and create some real fire power. Yoshio will pull the opposition wide, or he will create crosses to the two forwards.
With this formation it aims to push the ball through the centre and slide the ball through to the pacey forward. Kida will be there to stop threats and recycle the ball to Watanabe and Taehae. The wing backs are designed to push forward and support the wide players moving out of position.
This is a strong team in the J.League and we want to take the fight to anyone we play. We need to push to be better, we just need to know where the line is with this team.

Managing Yokohama F Marinos is on FM24 is going to be fun for me as I have never managed in this league. As well as that I like teams that want to be the best, it’s a personal motivation of mine. This team once we are through the first season could dominate for years to come.
The strength of this team are some of the imports they have acquired. While Japanese football has definitely got better, these guys have added some real talent and value. The weakness of the team is the lack of top level GK, every team has a weakness and we need to mitigate this one.
The opportunity in this team is that we have a number of gifted Japanese players in the squad. We need to decide which players will play in each position and ship the others off. Then we reinvest and strengthen in each position. The threat is that we struggle to stay on top of the league while we transition to an even better team.
