What the hell is a yo-yo club?
Norwich City have been a yo-yo club in the modern era. In the last ten years they have been relegated from the EPL 4 times. It’s time that we changed that.
The concept for this series is that we take control of each team that has been in the Premier League and now residing in the lower divisions. Each team will get a guide of how we feel the team can be set up on FM24. Th problem for most managers is how to make a team effective from the start.
In this guide we will be managing Norwich City on FM24. They have been up and down to the EPL a number of times in the modern era, they just need to stick after promotion. Let’s see what we can do with Norwich City, which style of football suits them? Who are the key players? Read on to see our ideas.
In the guide, you’ll find everything you need to know to get started with Norwich City, including:
- What objectives Norwich City have and why they are important.
- The different types of players and how they work in the squad.
- Tips, tactics, and best practices to succeed with Norwich City.
I think it time to get Norwich City promoted and take on the EPL!
Norwich City objectives
So with every team that we start with on FM24 we will check the board and supporter objectives. We use these for two main reasons, first is to see what culture we will be fostering and the second is to see what limitations we have on our tactical style. So let’s see what they have in store for us at Norwich City.
The board have gone for a youth development approach, which is fairly common. They want you to scout, recruit, train and coach youngsters, which is a great philosophy to have. This means that the first thing we need to do is assess the staff, all coaches will need to be good with coaching youngsters, all scouts will need to be able to scout potential and we need a great head of youth development.
The other point is to play possession football which is great as that opens up a number of styles. We can use gegenpress, tiki taka and even fluid counter, these all fit the brief.
The supporters of Norwich City are an extension to the board in terms of objectives. They want to develop the youth at the club and have some homegrown heroes and we have mentioned our plan above. The style objectives are in line too, possession football is the name of the game. The difference is entertaining football, which is high tempo. This limits us to either gegenpress or fluid counter.
Norwich City First 11
Our next step on day one is to outline our first eleven and the formation that fits all of our strengths. This is easy in most cases as the key players will form the structure and the squad players will flesh out the other options. We will use the assistant reports in order to determine our key players.
Looking at the key players we have a number of awesome players available at Norwich City on FM24. We have the makings of a 433 DM wide with this team, and the right hand side seems to be very strong. With the best roles we can see that wingers and pressing/target strikers are an idea.
When moving on to the squad players I can see that the 433 DM Wide is indeed a visible option. This is made even more prominent with wingers in the AML slots and the lack of strikers. Our best problem is the lack of depth in the centre midfield area. That will be our first recruitment target.
Norwich City Tactics
We then move onto the best tactic for Norwich City on FM24. We do this through using all the assumptions that we have made above and born of it will be the tactic. Sometimes these tactics will take a while to bed as it may be very different to what the previous manager was preparing for.
Using the 433 DM Wide seemed like a wise choice through out this guide. It is a great possession tactic, it has a great defensive structure and our players fit within the tactic. My biggest concern is that we are using one striker and I don’t think any of the strikers are good enough. To mitigate this problem we are playing with two very fast wingers to cross the ball to our strikers strength.
The central midfield is typical, we have one of each role – attack, support and defence. The wingbacks have a support to give support to the wingers and also provide a passing option to the centre midfield.
The reason that to have gone with fluid counter is because we needed possession and tempo as per objectives. That left us two options, but because the backline are slow I decided with a style with a lower back line.
Get started with Norwich City today
I think Norwich City could be a fun team on FM24 with their fast wingers and star players. While not being a strong as some of the other Championship favourites, I think they could be promoted in the first season.
The strength of this team is the midfield, there are some fantastic options such as McLean and Sara, with younger players like Nunez and Gibbs. There is plenty of class and creativity. The weakness of the team I think are the strikers, they are very limited and not stand out performers. I would normally play two strikers with a team like this, but there is no depth.
The opportunity is to create a youth development culture at the club, bring them in and train them with the awesome youth facilities. There are already a few in the first team that could be great. I think the threat to the team I think is that the longer it takes to get promoted the harder it is financially at the club. What this means that you could end up losing top players to pay.
