A fallen giant, struggling to get up
The story of Chelsea has been sad over the last few years. They have been a wonderful team under Abramovich, but since he left there has been a transition.
Welcome to the latest edition of the day one series. What we do in this series is to take over each team in the Premier League and suggest how to start on day one with them. We go through the team objectives, the key players and then put it together with the tactics.
This time around we are using Chelsea FC. They have been very successful in the modern era, until it all went very wrong a few years ago and Abramovich left. There were a number of managerial changes, lots of players coming and going and tactical changes galore. It was like Chelsea lost their identity, and this is why we are using them.
In the guide, you will find everything you need to know to get started with Chelsea, including:
- What objectives do Chelsea face and why they are important.
- The different types of players and how they work in the squad.
- Tips, tactics, and best practices to succeed with Chelsea.
Read on and continue the great work that Chelsea have done so far on FM24!
Team objectives
So the best place to start with your strategy is the end and work backwards. What this means is that we need something to work towards. Using the supporter and board expectations we will get the idea of what they want and also what effect it has on the way we play.
Let’s start with the supporter expectations. This is one of the largest lists of expectations by supporters in the league in FM24. Chelsea fans are really passionate about their club as we all know. The easy ones are attacking and entertaining football, they go hand in hand. As long as you are playing winning attacking football nobody can quibble, build that into your tactic.
Qualify for Europa is probably the minimum this club can achieve with the talent they have available. Then the next one is to sign high reputation players, which means that they want to sign the best of the best. That will be an expensive task, so each one that you buy needs to be well thought out. As for the other objectives they are about beating rivals, which they should be.
Good news is the board agree with the supporters on fm24. They want you to be buying the biggest names in football and push this team to the next level. When you combine this objective with one of their other ones, the increase in commercial revenue it makes for a good story. Buying top players from the commercial market countries like Japan, China and US will complete all sorts of ambitions.
Chelsea first 11
Let’s go onto the next step, finding out who are best players are. The way in which we do that is by sorting the squad by the current ability rating. The top players are anyone over 3 stars and anyone below 3 stars is a weakness and needs to be replaced.
Chelsea have a lot of great players with high potential. We have nearly a whole first team made up of key players in the squad, this shows great strength for Chelsea on fm24. We are two positions away from the 4231 formation, so it is pretty obvious where we are going with this. One is a goal keeper and the other is an AML.
Looking at the rest of the squad shows that we do have those positions covered by Mudryk and Sanchez. It is an impressively strong squad and has a lot of potential for the future. This confuses me when looking at the objectives of the board. In the years to come, Chelsea will be amazing no doubt.
Chelsea Tactics
After the discussions above we come to the tactics and strategy side of things. This is where we put it all together, all the information so we can work together with the club. It is obvious to me that the players are very well suited to the 4231 formation and that provides attacking and possession based football, which in turn leads to entertaining football.
This is how we are lining in the 4231 formation and it is an impressive squad. Starting from our end result the Broja is a very fast forward who likes the ball to feet. His best attribute is finishing in the technical box and that is what we focus on. The midfielders behind him are designed to attack the centre with him and the team instructions is to push through balls.
This is a one dimensional approach with the forward, but the midfield and wide players have their roles to add some flair. The inside forward pushes into the middle to support and the winger is stretching play. The ball winner in midfield will recycle the ball and the box to box will support in the middle. There are a lot of passing patterns in this formation and they all start from the defence.

Chelsea FC are definitely a great proposition for a club to manage on fm24. They have a very strong first team, which is no real surprise with the money they have invested in the team. As well as that they have so many players that are young with great potential, this team if manged well could be a world beater.
The main strength of this team is that it is very well designed to play a 4231, I’ve never seen a more well suited formation. This formation is great going forward, entertaining and penetrating the opposition’s backline. The weakness to the team is that at the moment it does not have that star, the one that stands out above the rest like Man City or Liverpool do.
The big opportunity with this club, is the potential. They have an abundance of potential talent here, but as they say everyone has potential if they do something with it. The threat to the team is underachieving, this team are ambitious and want to win. If you cannot mange that in the first couple of seasons then say good bye to the top talent, because they will be walking away.
