Player Recruitment: End of Season Potential Ability (Man Utd)

This is a fairly similar approach to the current ability approach. We will be fine as long as the data is accurate. That data is dependent upon staff having good stats around identifying youth ability. With this approach we need to set Man Utd up as a power house in youth recruitment and development.

The first things that we did, was to ask the board to upgrade the standard of the youth facilities and coaching. We then look at the scouts, coaching staff and the head of youth development. We need to set a standard, we sack anyone that does not have at least 15 in judging player potential and working with youngsters.

Our next step was to release all under 18s and under 21s that do not have at least a potential of 2.5 stars. If it is too expensive to release them, then set them to release at the end of their contract or sell them. Get the underachievers out, let’s try and recreate ’92.

Man Utd results

First things first, this was a lot of fun. I now understand why people are addicted to buying wonderkids and high potential youth players. The season was an overwhelming success as you can see from the screen shot:

We won the FA cup and Super Cup, runner up in the Champions League and Carabao Cup. So we featured as much as we can in every competition. We came third in the league, which is disappointing, but this is mainly down to a bad start and that we had a tired team.

In analysing the league, we cannot say that we deserved to win it. We won less, scored less and conceded more than the top two teams. Moving on, we need to look at both the attack and defense. I expect that our players will get better with time and grow in their positions and training, which means results will get better.

We will look to the defence, I think we can concede ten less next season. This will require so work though, we need to look at the defence. This will require full inquest through the line depth and passing ability. It could potentially change the mentality of the team.

At the other end, will are doing well. I think it will be easier to concede less than to score more. Once we get that solid foundation then we will build central and forward.

So, in short, this has been the best performing team out of the series. Look at the individual ratings, they are all over 7! That is impressive, by anyone’s standard. The good news is that we can only improve on this. The goals came from everywhere, left wing, striker, centre mid, right wing and even the defensive midfield.

Hannibal was great with his 18 assists, which is a record for Man Utd. Also the number of players that exceeded their expected goals was good to see, that is a sign of real quality. Hojlund was injured a few times, which led to Sesko leading the line and doing a great job.

This is the same tactic that I have used throughout this series, and this team seemed to enjoy it more than any other. A young team does tend to have a few weaknesses like inconsistency, but in the season to come, this is the team to beat.

We do not need to take drastic measures with this team. We not want too many superstars as it will create a victim of success model. What want to carefully model a succession plan in the first eleven. We’ll look at the players with low potential, so under 2.5 stars and move them on, replacing them with someone new with a brighter future.

As we can see, there is still a lot of potential players that we know about, let alone all the players that the scouts have not uncovered yet. Our main targets are a new goal keeper with high potential and the full backs, the current ones are getting on.

Conclusion

This team are awesome, I have really fallen in love with them and their successes. The results speak for themselves, there has been massive progress and is the start of something special. In terms of pushing forward, there really isn’t much to do. We have a huge budget still, nearly a full squad of high potential players.

It’s now just about creating a positive and effective infrastructure to produce a constant supply of young players or income, whichever comes first. As discussed before, I am going to look at the defense and see if we can redesign it. This could be the defensive line, and mentality or even a formation change.
