One season wonders?

So here we are, another episode of managing teams in La Liga on FM24. The whole focus of this guide is take control of every Spanish league team and create an easy to understand short guide to get you started. The problem for most managers when taking over a new club is what tactic to use?
In this guide we will be managing the mighty Osasuna on FM24, who have just qualified for Europe since being promoted. This is a big season for them, they have started the road to greatness breaking out of the midtable mire. The foundations are there to launch from, let’s push them further!
In our guide, you’ll find everything you need to know to get started with Osasuna, including:
- What objectives Osasuna have and why they are important.
- The different types of players and how they work in the squad.
- Tips, tactics, and best practices to succeed with Osasuna.
So let’s take Osasuna to yet another level!
Osasuna objectives
Our first step in levelling up Osasuna on FM24 is to review the board and supporter objectives. This will guide us on how they want us to play and recruit, it will help us create an identity like the top sides. You can see this as a restriction, or you see this as guidance. Either way it will create the framework of our identity.
Let’s start with the board objectives, nothing crazy here. They want to grow and strive to being a bigger club but the path to get there is up to us. The main message is that they want to grow, but it is a managed growth, a slow growth. This is evident from the objectives around contracts and the work within the wage budget.
They are also admitting that they do not mind reverting back to midtable in order to do well in Europe. I cannot accept this myself, and we need to be pushing on both fronts.
The supporter objectives on FM24 are pretty straight forward, if a little boring to be honest. Become an established La Liga club has already been done, it just means that we need to stay in the division for a number of years. We will only face Zaragoza in the cup, but we need to plan for Real Madrid.
Osasuna First 11
Our next step is to sort the squad into our first team with Osasuna on FM24. The way we do this is to sort all the squad by current ability in three groups.
The first group is players over 3 stars, which are key players, the second group is players rated at 3 stars, they are squad players. The last group are players under 3 stars, which are players that will move on, unless they have potential over 3 stars.
Looking at the list of key players we have a fantastic set of players available and a large number of them. The best thing is that the team basically picks itself a formation, it would be easy to build a 4231 around this team. We have the back 4 and GK already, the attacking midfielders and the striker. Also there is Aimar, who we all know about by now.
Moving onto the squad we can see that we have plenty of depth in a 4231 and could potentially play with DMs or MCs. This flexibility opens the door to having a tactic for both home and away. One thing I noticed is that we do not have many players over 30, and most who are over are only just over.
Osasuna Tactics
Now we have to take all the information we have above and turn it into something with Osasuna on FM24. We are looking to take the strengths and play to them to give us the best success. Some of this will be trial and error and other times we will stick to tried and tested methods.
Let’s first start off with how we score goals, the most important thing in football. Budimir is a fantastic target man, but he is a goal scoring target man like Chris Sutton or Shearer were. As a result I have put him as an attacking role so he focuses on goals more than playing players in. This means that we need to be exploiting his aerial ability, so we want crosses in the box.
The way that we create crosses in the box is through wide players, the wingers will cross from the byline and the wingbacks from deep. The way that we get the ball to the wingers is through the advanced playmaker passing out wide or the deep lying playmaker doing the same from deep. Another option is to use ball playing centre backs again to get it out wide.
Defensively we have a central box formation to protect the middle, we do not want teams passing through us. The centre backs are our last line of defence, before them we have the DM partnership. There are two ways to look at this, if our centre backs are tall then funnel the opposition wide. If your defenders are short you need to funnel them centrally to intercept their passes.
Get started with Osasuna today
Osasuna are definitely a team to consider on FM24, especially as they are on the path from good to great. We can jump on and ride the momentum and take them somewhere special. The good news is the team are pretty much set up from the start, you just need to fill the gaps.
The strength of the team is the forward line, while it could be argued as one dimensional it is a strong linear strategy that works. The target forward and the wingers are always a good combination. The weakness is the defensive midfield, it needs some real invest to boost it up to the levels around the rest of the team.
The opportunity is Aimar and Munoz, they both have wonderkid potential. This means that we need to focus on playing them and building up the youth system. The knock on effect here is that it will help build a pipeline of youth players.
The threat of the team is that if we over spend, buy dud players or not achieve our goals it will leave serious repercussions for the club. As a result this will stunt growth.
