The boys are back in town!
Burnley are back in the big time! We’ve missed them in the EPL, but they haven’t returned alone, they have brought some Kompany with them. Can’t wait to play!
This is a little FM24 series in which we manage each Premier League team on day one in order to help people starting for the first time. This is a basic guide to how we see managing Burnley from the start and the options which are available.
Burnley were a regular member of the EPL for a number of years until they relegated a couple of seasons back. They immediately bounced back under new management and had a change of approach in the process. Let’s keep them in the EPL this season and build a solid base to go forward.
Read on to see our ideas on how to manage Burnley in the first season!
Burnley Objectives
The club objectives at Burnley are pretty straight forward, just don’t sign anyone over 30. I would presume this is because players over 30 become dead wood and a lower resale value. The reason for this is they are aiming to building a stadium and to free up cash they want players with resale value. Growing the reputation of the club will help cash flow too in merchandise, players and the riches of cup runs.
The supporters are desperate to keep the club in the EPL, which in turn will help with finances and raising the profile of the club. The possession and entertaining football objectives seem to be the same with every club in the EPL. Burnley can play good football and we will bear this in mind when designing the Burnley tactic.
As for getting the better of Blackburn and Preston, I can’t see that being a problem. They aren’t in the same division so we will not regularly see them and we are in a higher league so chances are we beat the min the cup.
Burnley first 11
Right, looking at the data of the current ability stars we can see their is a strong core within this team. It is also very clear at this point that the team are set up to play in a 4231 formation. This is actually a really easy team to put together and I really like the players in the squad. There is a good balance of defensive and attacking players.
Looking at the rest of the squad we can see that there is a strong sense of potential and that we can fill the formation easily. One noticeable problem is that there is no recognised striker, so that will be the first position on the list to buy for. As well as that, the goalkeepers current ability is average at the moment, the good news is that they have potential.
Other than the obvious problem, that our best striker is on loan, and our main striker is fairly average, we have the making of a good team. I am confident this team will avoid relegation, with a good 2nd season due to a few transfers and players realising their potential.
I used the Wolves tactic from a previous blog as they have similar objectives and formation. We will endeavour to look at the stats and make changes to the team as play along.
The Tactics
At this moment in time, I am treating Burnley like Wolves in a previous blog. They have similar objectives and squads, in terms of formations. Additionally, Burnley are set up to play in this formation. There is so much potential in this team and as players grow, their roles and positions change. As a result the structure of the team will too.
One thing we need to watch is the back line, most of the first team have average pace and acceleration. This means that the fast strikers could annihilate our backline. The sweeper keeper is essential in this tactic to mop up the balls being put through.
Due to playing without a DM the defence are exposed more. We do have a ball winner and box to box midfield to support the attack and defence. This brings a balance to the team, so we can play a balanced mentality, which in turn lowers our line making us harder to beat.
The forward is an advanced forward, so need to get the wingers play low crosses and the inside forward to play through balls. The advanced playmaker will play through balls on the ground too. When Weghorst returns the wingers will get to the byline and cross high.
Conclusion
Burnley have a really good team, the have clear identity and plenty of potential. The first team almost picks itself with a strong core. There is plenty of potential throughout the squad with great hop for the future. Burnley are designed to regenerate the team with younger players for the future.
The main problem is the lack of strikers, or recognised goal scorers. Foster is an advanced forward, but he only has average ratings and stats at the moment. As we only have one forward, it is imperative to have support in AM and either wing. One winger is an inside forward to help support the striker and maybe having an inside forward on either side might work.
