Introduction
It was inevitable that I would build the 424 FM26 tactic after it’s great success on FM24. The only thought in my head is how would it look in possession, so a few ideas went through my mind.
The reason I built this FM26 tactic is because I wanted to test the two striker formations. More goals are scored by teams with two strikers, especially useful if you do not have one amazing striker.
Tactic Overview
So this is the 424 FM26 tactic I like to call “thinking inside the box”. It is a very attacking tactic and there a few moving parts in the transition. The basics of the in possession are that the two wing backs push inside to the DM positions and the DMs push up into the AMC positions.
This creates a strong overload through the centre and an attack consisting of 6 players. Basically for the limited movement it can create absolute chaos in front of the opposition box.
As it is such an attacking strategy I have gone with a gegenpress tactical style, which synergises well with the counter box we create in the centre of defence.
Key Player Roles & Instructions
Defence
This defensive set up is to in place to defend the centre on counters and also to remain compact when we are not in possession. The 424 FM26 tactic is more attack focussed so the defensive measures are to support that.
Midfield
In the midfield the players which are most important are the 2 DMs. They are going to be the link between the attack and defence through the middle. They are going to need to be physically very fit and with great passing ability and maybe one-twos trait.
Attack
The attack is made up of two strikers and support by 4 midfielders in the in possession phase. Now you can change this to a combination of a creative and a goal threat or two goal threats. I prefer the idea of two goal threats as there is so much creativity supporting them.
Team Instructions
As I have previously mentioned we are running the gegenpress tactical style as we are creating a central block for defence. It looks as though the gegenpress tactics are still the strongest in the game, that will please a lot of people.
In Possession
Now the whole point of our tactical style for the 424 fm26 tactic is to win the ball early and upfield. This in turn then creates a quick transition and we are back in possession and in a dangerous place.
Out of Possession
This is the fragile part of the formation. We have a high line, with a high press and a trigger press that happens much more often. Basically you need fit players, but if they aren’t they will be playing in this system for a season.
Your defenders will want to be fast, especially when defending the counter.
Strengths of the 424 FM26 Tactic
So when I am assessing a tactic like the 424 FM26 tactic, there are 4 areas I tend to look at – Duelling, Possession, chance creation and shooting. The general performance hub, gives me a good indicator as to how these are going.
Firstly we will call tackles won ratio the duelling, which we are doing really well in. This is a basic concept, but it’s relevant for now. The next area is possession and the pass completion stats tells me that it’s just a above average. This needs some improvement.
Now we don’t strictly have any metrics that indicator chance creation, but we could use the number of shots. This stat is really high, so we are creating shooting opportunities per game.
The next is shooting, so let’s look at the shooting quality. The only stat left for shooting is the shot accuracy which sits at 42.3 which is average in the league.
Overall this identifies to areas that need to be investigated more, possession and shooting. Is it a player problem or a tactical problem?
Best Teams/Saves for This Tactic
The 424 FM26 tactic is going to useful for any team that has a decent attack and looking for a title challenge or European spot. I used Shabab Al-Ahli as they are not favourites to win the league, this gives us a chance to upset the odds. Some teams that I would recommend are:
- Chelsea
- Rennes
- Betis
Results & Testing
As I previously mentioned I have trialled the 424 FM26 tactic with Shabab Al-Ahli in the UAE league. This is a new league on the game so I wanted to check it out too. It was interesting to say the least, but we were top scorers in the league and joint top with top other teams.
All in all this was a fantastic effort and gives me the confidence that the tactic has got legs.

Final Thoughts
The 424 fm26 tactic is back and better than before! I was worried that it wouldn’t be as effective as it was back on FM24. With Shabab Al-Ahli we have managed to be the top scorers in the league. With a bit of tweaking and personnel changes I think we would walk the league.
Let’s go mental and score even more goals! The main thing is to have fun guys, that is the enjoyable part of the journey.
