From collapse to glory
Istanbulspor have a fascinating history, from coming 4th and competing in the UEFA cup to financial collapse and relegation. Now they’re back in the Super Lig!
So we are back once again with another Turkish Super League FM24 tactics guide. Basically, we take over a team in the Turkish Super Lig and build FM24 tactics to get you started. The problem for most new managers is that they find it hard to determine who their first eleven is.
This episode is for Istanbulspor, they have had a colourful history going from finishing 4th and playing in the UEFA cup to financial meltdown and being relegated to being back in the Super Lig. It’s been a fantastic story for the club, but it’s time to build on that recent success.
In the guide, you’ll find everything you need to know to get started with Istanbulspor, including:
- What objectives Istanbulspor have and why they are important.
- The different types of players and how they work in the squad.
- Tips, tactics, and best practices to succeed with Istanbulspor.
We’ve got a great foundation with a historic club, let’s push them on!
Istanbulspor objectives
When building new FM24 tactics I always like to start with the board and supporter objectives. This gives us an idea of the club’s culture and what they expect from us. In most cases there will be an aspect that will restrict our tactics or recruitment, so we are aligned.
Looking at the board objectives, there is nothing which will affect our tactics. The objectives they have are based on making the club sustainable and that too much capital is not locked up on older players. Ultimately they want to stay up and not be in debt doing it.
The supporters are pretty relaxed too, they want to stay up and be part of the big leagues as much as I can. This is great from a tactical perspective as we can do whatever we feel is best for our available resources. This could even give us a good chance to build a clean slate tactic.
Istanbulspor First 11
In developing FM24 tactics our next step is to look at the players at our disposal. The first thing we do is sort our squad into key, squad and surplus players. I use the assistant reports for this sorting, under 3 stars are ready to leave, 3 stars is a squad player, and anyone above is a key player.
When looking at the key players, we have a lot of them, albeit a few are out on loan. There are quite a few observes here and lots of different routes we can take to structure our team. We have 3 centre backs so a back five is possible, which is obviously a good option for a relegation battling team.
The thing that puts me off here is that we have some very talented wingers and I do not think 5 at the back will help them. So a back 4 or 5 is possible, we have 3 midfielders and no strikers in the key players.
Now we move on to the squad players, and we don’t have many at all. What we do see though with the few we have is that they support a 433 DM formation. This is a solid formation which provides a decent attack and supports our personnel.
Istanbulspor Tactics
The next step on our journey to building FM24 tactics is putting all the information together and making it happen. Once we have gone through the above process it helps us to develop a tactic which fits the criteria.
I always start the tactic by looking at how we score goals and how they are created working back to the defence. Due to our lack of strikers the best one we have is a target man, so we need to set up some aerial supply. This means we need wingers to get down the byline and get crosses in.
We have gone with the traditional three man midfield with one attack, support and defensive role. This gives us a fair balance in midfield with everyone knowing their job, as well as not committing too many men forward.
Defensively we have a fantastic set up. We have the defensive role triangle with the centre backs and DM , which is our rock. We then have the support role wing backs supporting the wingers and defence and the midfield supports the forwards. Due to the pace in the defence we couldn’t play anything more attacking than balanced mentality.

To build FM24 tactics with Istanbulspor has been fun. They look like they have plenty of options in the team and players to a good standard for a relegation battling team. I think you can afford to think more positively with a team like this and build a better one in the future.
The strength of the team is the defence, a lot of the key players are based in the defensive positions and that is a great start for any team. The weakness is the lack of strikers, the best one we have is rated less than 3 stars, investment will be required.
The opportunity for me with this team is the large amount key players, we have more key players than any of the other relegation candidates, this gives us the edge. The threat is that if you do get relegated then all the good work will go to waste and the club goes into a tailspin.
