Have you ever taken over a new team on FM24 and had no idea what tactic to use? No need to fear, that is the reason for this guide. We will take teams from different leagues and different objectives and build FM24 tactics with them.
This FM24 tactics guide is for Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga. They are predicted to come bottom of the league by the media. As well as this they have a very small transfer budget and wage budget. No real surprise for a team that has just been promoted.

Darmstadt objectives
So in order to start our Darmstadt FM24 tactics we need to look at the board and supporter objectives. As a result this gives us an idea of the style the club wants us to play as well as the limitations.
Starting with the board objectives, they are not really interested in what style of play Darmstadt 98 play. They just want the club to be sustainable and to avoid relegation. They want to do this through recruitment in the lower leagues of Germany and by buying German players. Because of this I can feel a national challenge coming on.
The supporters on the other hand have real ideas about how they want the team to play football. They want counter attacking football, which means either fluid or direct counter football. The supporters also want to make the most of set pieces, this means that we will favour a direct counter football style.
So the style is decided, now we need to look at the players at our disposal.
Darmstadt first 11
So we have looked at our FM24 tactics at a general level, it’s not time to look at an individual level. This is most important to look at indicators for formation and roles. We need to take advantage of our strengths in order to play to the best of our ability.
To see who our best players are we use the assistant reports, this is mainly because we do not have any other data available. We decide on squad players as 3 star ratings and anyone above that is seen as a key player. Anyone under 3 stars is not good enough and we will look to move them on.
Wow! To my surprise we have a lot of key players in the squad, this is going to really help us decide on a structure. The first thing of note here, is that there is no width in attack. This is perfect for a counter formation as we can keep it tight in the centre. A couple of formations have leapt out at me including the 41212 diamond and the 4132.
Moving onto the squad we have a large number of players, and the trend continues. The majority of our players are central players, excluding two left wingers. This almost certainly indicates that we need to play a central focused formation. As well as this we can see that a lot of the roles in this team are defence orientated.
Darmstadt 98 tactics
So our next step is to put all our assumptions together and build it into our FM24 tactics for Darmstadt. What I will then do is use the style first, build a formation and look at what roles we can use. Quick tip, do not always use the best role a player has as it can lead to disjointed tactic of individuals.
I have settled with the 41212 as it is a formation that fits the team and one I have used with counter attacking football. We need to have the two strikers up front as we don’t have one striker that is good enough on his own. We are going to be using direct counter football and so need to have fast player at the top.
Due to being the lowest ranked team, we are going to be under a lot of pressure and so the wingbacks are going to be very important. The ball is going to be pushed out to them and they are going to be hitting through balls over the top. This could be very effective against high lines. The other duty they will have is to get down to the byline and bombard the opposition with crosses.
Defensively we have a very strong backline shielded by a ball winning midfielder and a deep lying playmaker. Our goal keeper is set to defend to challenge for crosses and be a shot stopper. We are in a low block in order to take the pace out of the game and as time goes on we will invest in commanding defenders who are great in the air.

If you want a challenge I think Darmstadt could be the team for you. In terms of FM24 tactics you can see that there are a number of options available. The tactic we have put together will be a good starting point for you. Additionally we are just trying to keep them up, which is a lot easier than challenging for the title.
The main strength of this team is the core, they have strong defensive core throughout the team. Use this to your advantage, especially when playing the big teams like Bayern and Dortmund. The weakness of the team seems to be the forwards, that is why we have chosen two up front. Just get them the service and hopefully they will get it right.
