The new age of football is alive and well
Brentford FC are a different sort of club. They aren’t based on the ideals of football of old; they are pushing the data revolution in football. So far, so good.
Welcome back to our edition on how to manage a Premier League team in the first season on FM24. The idea of this guide is to manage each team in the EPL for the first season. We will then put our recommendations and suggestions in the guide to help you understand the team and get a good start.
This edition covers Brentford FC, a team that I admire in a lot of ways. Brentford FC are known to a lot data driven people as the Moneyball club. They have invested a lot of time and energy into finding the data that they can use to influence their football and recruitment. So far so good, they are in the Premier League for their third season and are on the rise. We have a guide of how we would set up from day one too.
In this guide we are going to:
- Look at the league performance and individual performances.
- We will look at the tactics which have been used in Football Manager 24.
- Potential transfers and areas of improvement.
Read on and let’s push Brentford even further on FM24!
Brentford FC results
In this section, I will discuss the team results so far. While this is general data it can lead to some interesting developments. Using the data we can see things like whether we are better home or away or the type of team that we win against.
I really like Brentford FC in real life. On FM24 I do not like Brentford FC. The season will be saved I can assure you of that, but they do not feel like a team I would regard as fun. We started off with a couple of draws and a few losses, things picked up a little and has 2 wins in 4.
When we hit November this is where we start to play football. The only problem with this is that we are already 2/3 months in and it’s taken this long to start gelling. Even we picked up some big wins against other relegation teams, which says to me that we are not going down. We also beat Liverpool which was a nice surprise.
Regardless of the results, the table doesn’t lie and we find ourselves in 12th in the EPL. Brentford FC have surprised me here, and while I am hard on the team, we are achieving what we were asked to do. I want to push on from there good performance in real life of 9th last year.
The good news is that we are typically lower midtable, with 6 winds and ten losses. We need to score more goals, we get enough opportunities, we just need to put them away. We need improve on our quality, we will sort the team in January and there maybe some transfers.
Individual Performance
In this section, we take a look at the best players on the team by their performance. We will also look at any weak links and how we can mitigate them. This data is brilliant as it can hone in on any bigger problems you are having with your team. You could also tie this in with straight line theory, changing the trajectory of the team.
So from the first impressions of the Brantford FC data on FM24, we can see that we have three players performing above the rest. Norgaard has some wonderful games, chipping in with goals and assists. Mbeumo is one of my favourite Brentford FC players, and is finding his place in the team on the wing.
I think Yoane Wissa has been playing so well as either a forward or an inside forward. There are a few other players that playing to a good standard too, the defence. Both Pinnock and Ajer with Janelt in front, have a great relationship, we need to focus on the full backs though.
Looking at the basic data, Xg shows that the majority of the team are doing what they are meant to do, barring a few players like Pinnock. Since Pinnock is not a goalscorer I’m not too fussed. The real problem I can see is passing, we have a number of players playing under 85%, we need to keep an eye on this.
Brentford FC Tactics
In this section, I will discuss the tactics that are being used and if we have had to change anything. You will find the tactic that we have set up in the day one guide. This will give you a good overview of the tactic we have chosen and the reason for it.
On my first observations, our goals scorers all play on the wing or as a striker. This is good as it indicates the right players re getting into the threatening positions. We will see what happens when Ivan Toney is back in the Brentford FC line up. I think it’s a matter of quality at the moment, in the first season you are kind of stuck with some players.
Additionally, the defence in the centre looks to be working well, maybe the quality of the full backs is questionable, but we asking them to do a double role. If you pull back the wingers then you will sacrifice more attacking ability, which we are already struggling with. We need to look at the pace of the backline and potentially stop playing out from the back. I will update at the end of the season what we change.
Conclusion
I think Brentford FC in FM24 are a good team to start off with. There has been a fantastic base created in real life, and this can be seen in the squad. It’s a shame that arguably your best player is not available until January, and Toney will score the goals. The problem I found is that they just didn’t seem very fun to play with; hopefully, over time this will change with players adapting.
The strength of the team is the spine. What this means is that the central areas of the team are very strong, in particular the defense and DM. They have a good relationship and are a good mix of roles. The weakness for Brentford FC seems to be the forwards; they don’t score enough goals without Toney being in the team. I will see what Toney does before committing to a new forward.
The opportunity in this team is to build from the core and design wide players to play to your preference. Additionally, this means you can change the formation to suit you. The threat of Brentford FC is that if you take your eye off the ball and underperform, you could undermine the whole project. This club has values, and it has a plan; stick to it.
